University of Salford Law student beats competition from across the country to be named as a finalist in a law competition.
Shakira Schofield, 21, has triumphed against law students and legal trainees nationwide to be named as one of 10 finalists in National Accident Helpline’s annual Future Legal Mind Award 2021.
A record number of entries were received for the annual, essay-based competition this year. Past winners have gone on to become barristers and solicitors.
Studying Law with Criminology, the second-year Salford University student dreams of becoming a solicitor working within, criminal, public or EU law.
In her competition entry, she argued that the Suicide Act 1961 needs urgent reform as while it removed the criminal liability for suicide, it “kept the criminal penalty for assisted suicide” which made her question the difference between committing suicide and doing it with “the help of others”.
Shakira said: “When I heard I was a finalist, I was ecstatic; I screamed so loud that my cats freaked and ran out of my room.
After applying for placements and vacation schemes and being rejected, this has boosted my confidence incredibly.”
Each of the Future Legal Mind finalists has recorded a video explaining why they should be named the winner. To watch Shakira’s video, visit https://bit.ly/3gM2lxK.
Will Herbertson, Marketing and Strategy Director, NAHL Group, said: “From her essay and video it’s clear to see that Shakira feels passionately about reforming criminal law. We wish her the best of luck for the final.”
