Applying for further leave to remain in the UK - Academic Progression

If you are applying for further leave to remain in the UK on a Student visa, you are required to show that you have progressed academically during your studies.

If you are unable to show that you have "academically progressed" you are required to return home to make a new Student visa application.

You are exempt from academic progression if:

  • You are applying for a new visa relating to a PhD programme of study for which you have already been granted a Student Visa; or
  • You are applying for a new visa in order to complete a re-take or repeat an element of your programme of study; or
  • You are going to, are completing, or have completed a placement year with an employer or a study abroad module at another University
Please note, where you are required to leave the UK to make your new visa application then your application is likely to be refused if you are close to your course completion date, i.e. if your visa cannot be issued in time to allow you to return to the University before your course completion date.

It is therefore advisable to take visa processing times into account before making a Student visa application. A student visa application normally takes 3 weeks to process from overseas but can take longer during busy periods.

You will be asked further questions in relation to your academic progression. You may also be required to upload information confirming you have returned home. In such cases we require:

  • A flight ticket; and
  • An entry stamp from your passport (where applicable) or a flight boarding pass
As you have indicated you may be exempt from academic progression on the basis you are not making the application from within the UK, you will need to provide evidence of your return home.

Interruptions of Study

Interruption of study

If you are returning from an Interruption of Study you must provide evidence that you returned to your home country during your interruption. This evidence includes your flight ticket(s) and an entry stamp from your passport (where applicable) or a flight boarding pass.

Switching Immigration Category

Switching Immigration Category

If youcurrently have a visitor visa you will not be able to switch immigration category whilst in the United Kingdom. It is advisable that you discuss with your school an appropriate timeframe to leave the UK and return to your home country to make a Student Visa application if you have not already done so before your current leave expires. Remember it can take up to 3 weeks to process a Student Visa application from overseas (and longer during peak periods).

Leaving the UK to make a new visa application may, in some instances, require you to take an interruption of study.

In order for us to assess your CAS application you will need to provide us with evidence that you have returned home. This evidence includes your flight tickets and an entry stamp from your passport (where applicable) or a flight boarding pass.
